Pointed tip, sharp, thin, flexible instrument with a slight hook at the end, having a slim handle. 

Function - To examine teeth for decay (caries), calculus, or other abnormalities. Used for exploring soft spots in your teeth that might indicate decay. The hook on the end is used for tactile investigation of the enamel.

Characteristics - Comes in Single or Double-ended (double-ended models may have different styles of working ends, and may also have explorer on one end and periodontal probe on the other end). Available in a variety of sizes and types like Orban, Pigtail, and Shepherd's hook.
